Lake Lessing 

Lake Lessing (Armenian: Լեսինգ (լիճ)) is a noteworthy natural lake situated in the Aragatsotn region of Armenia. Positioned on the eastern slope of the Aragats mountains, the lake is elevated at 3,200 meters above sea level.

Geographical Location and Vegetation

Approximately 11 km northwest of Tsaghkashen village, Lake Lessing is enveloped by a unique alpine vegetation. The lake has no inflow or outflow of water, marking it as a non-flowing lake. Its location is further defined by its proximity to significant geographical features; it is found about 8 km northwest of Tsaghkashen village and 3 km northeast of the eastern peak of Aragats mountain, sitting at an altitude of 3,300 meters.

Formation and Characteristics

The lake was formed at the bottom of a glacial ridge, coming into existence due to a moraine’s blocking of the area. Covering an area of 0.016 km², Lake Lessing boasts a maximum depth of 2.5 meters and holds a water volume of 18,800 m³. Visitors and researchers alike can note the clean and cool quality of the lake’s water. During the summer, the water temperature averages around 9 °C, primarily fed by the melting of surrounding snow.

Historical Significance

The lake holds historical significance as it was named in honour of academician Franz Yuli Levinsohn-Lessing. Levinsohn-Lessing led the Transcaucasian expeditions of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Aragats and the Sevan Lake basin between 1927 and 1929, playing a pivotal role in the exploration and study of the region.
