How to Play the Countries of the World Quiz

Choose the 15-minute challenge or start an untimed practice round. Type one country at a time into the answer field. When the quiz recognizes a correct name, the country appears on the map, is added to its continent list, and increases your score automatically.

Common English alternatives are accepted, including Turkey for Türkiye, Ivory Coast for Côte d’Ivoire, and Czech Republic for Czechia. If an answer could refer to more than one country, the quiz will ask you to be more specific. For example, enter DR Congo or Republic of the Congo instead of only Congo.

When the game ends, the map reveals the countries you missed. You can review them, retry only those countries, or start the full quiz again.

What Counts as a Country in This Quiz?

The standard quiz contains 195 countries: the 193 member states of the United Nations plus its two non-member observer states, the Holy See and the State of Palestine. Both Holy See and Vatican City are accepted as answers.

Dependent territories and other separately administered areas are not additional answers in the standard game. For example, Greenland, Puerto Rico, and Hong Kong do not increase the score. This keeps every round based on the same clearly defined list.

Why Do Some Lists Say 193, 195, 196, or 197 Countries?

The number depends on the rule being used. There are 193 UN member states. The widely used total of 195 adds the Holy See and the State of Palestine, which are the UN’s two non-member observer states.

Some quizzes use 196 by adding one further state, commonly Taiwan. This quiz also offers an expanded 197-country mode that adds Kosovo and Taiwan to the standard 195. Their international positions are different, and neither is a UN member. Including them in the expanded game is a stated quiz convention, not a claim that every government uses the same definition.

How to Remember All 195 Countries

• Work by region. Complete one part of a continent before moving to the next, such as West Africa, Southeast Asia, or the Caribbean.
• Return to small countries later. European microstates and island countries are often easier to remember during a final sweep.
• Use the map as a memory cue. Empty areas can reveal which region still has missing answers without showing the names.
• Review your misses. Retrying the countries you forgot is more useful than immediately repeating every answer you already knew.

Every country is assigned to one continent for gameplay so that it is counted only once. North America includes Central America and the Caribbean. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Türkiye are grouped with Asia; Russia is grouped with Europe; and Egypt is grouped with Africa. These statistical quiz groupings do not change wider geographic, cultural, or national connections.
