Chapada Diamantina National Park – Brazil

Chapada Diamantina is one of the most beautiful national parks in Brazil. It is located in the heart of Bahia. This place is a great example of where you can enjoy nature, silence and clean air. Here you can find hummingbirds, several species of parrots, capybaras and small lizards. In mountainous areas, rare species of endangered animals such as jaguars and cougars live. There are magnificent mountain landscapes, rivers, rapids, waterfalls, caves, and transparent reservoirs.

One of these places deserves special attention. About 400 km from the state capital, El Salvador, there is a wonderful place called Poco Encantado or the “Enchanted Well”. This is a reservoir lost in a cave, having a depth of 36 meters with so clear water that small pebbles can be seen at its bottom.

If you decide to visit this “enchanted” place, it is recommended to come between April and September. The real miracle that explains the name of the pond happens every day from 10:30 to 12:30, when direct sunlight that seeps through cracks in the cave reaches the surface of the water and creates refraction of the beam. As a result, light fills the lake with a soft azure glow, illuminating the well to the bottom.

Swimming is strictly prohibited. This bewitching sight attracts too many people. The Brazilian government very carefully protects this geological miracle, therefore it is forced to limit and control access to a unique reservoir. A visit to an enchanted well is only possible as part of an organized group. Try to book a ticket in advance, because the number of tourists who want to see the well is very large.
